Thankful for God’s Goodness

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!” Psalm 136:1

While reflecting on what I’m thankful for this Thanksgiving season, I wanted to go deeper than my usual response: family and friends, health, home, etc. I am very thankful for all those things; however, when I search my heart for the thing that I am most grateful for, it is truly the goodness of God. It is His goodness that makes all those other things possible.

It is God’s goodness that has brought me through many of life’s challenges. I knew that His goodness and mercy were following me. (Psalm 23:6). During times of struggle, I was assured that I would see His goodness in the land of the living. (Psalm 27:13). Knowing of His goodness brought me tremendous comfort, because I knew I was not alone. (Joshua 1:5).

The word “goodness” is derived from the Old English word, “godness.” The dictionary states that goodness is sometimes used as a substitute for the word “God.” Goodness is defined as, “the quality or state of being good;” and “the beneficial or nutritious part.” The essence of God is goodness; and for His children, His goodness is beneficial and nutritious. “Taste and see that the Lord is good.” (Psalm 34:8). It is through His goodness that we receive every good and perfect gift. (James 1:17). It was His goodness that first drew us to Him, and it is His goodness that continues to draw mankind. (Romans 2:4).

“What shall I return to the Lord for all His goodness to me?” (Psalm 116:12). I will share “the riches of His goodness.” (Romans 2:4). It is His goodness that causes me to pause and write to you each month. I am compelled to share God’s goodness with you in hopes that you will understand “how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is” (Ephesians 3:18); and that you may “experience the love of Christ.” (Ephesians 3:19).

I pray that you and yours had a Happy Thanksgiving!
Peace, Love and Blessing
